I spent most of Monday wandering around the National Air and Space Museum again, but in the afternoon Tina and I had an hour to kill so we went to the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial (good suggestion, Carol). Quite cool, actually, and the parking was a breeze.

I just had to do one tourist shot.

    Washington Monument

And this is a cool, though I am certain quite common, shot of the Washington Monument reflecting in the Tidal Basin.

    Do Not Trip

    Do Not Trip
Yet another shot of the infamous “do not trip” signs that seem to be spotted around randomly at Washington monuments. I have know idea who the couple are…

Supposedly, you rub Fala’s ears for good luck. Tina suggested that the park service changes the rumor from time to time just to keep the whole statue polished :-)

    Couldn’t resist a shot here…

    …And apparently Tina couldn’t either :-)

    Nice pose, Tina!

    This is just cool…

And, finally, a shot of the Jefferson Memorial. This is as close as I could get – the parking lot near the monument was closed and I had no desire to hike a half mile in the heat.

Sunday, Tina, Katy, Joe and I made a trip out to Annapolis – a very cool little town. Good crab cakes, too.

    Vacant Dock

    Vacant Dock
While sitting in traffic (before the great quest for a parking place) we spotted this lovely loading dock. Notice that the dock does not open into a building or anything – you can see trees through it! I thought the purpose of a loading dock was to protect the merchandise from weather, not provide a frame for a nice view!

    Yacht Sales

    Yacht Sales
I have no idea why I took this picture – want to buy a yacht?

    No Respect

I just love the name on this boat!

As close as I will get to “artsy” today…

    End of the Street

    End of the Street
Our tour guide told us an interesting story here: Apparently in Colonial times the waterfront was not the place to be – you wanted to live as far from it as possible. The reason? Well, the sewers ran down the street into the harbor, so things were a bit, well, stinky at the waterfront!

    Rumrunner

    Rumrunner
Looks like the Kennedys are in town…

    Flooded Garage

    Flooded Garage
Yes, I know this is really a boat dock, but I just could not help think “Oh, no, my garage is flooded again!”

    Sorry…

    Cable Crossing

    Cable Crossing
Tina, you’re probably the only one that will “get” this one :-)

    Under Construction

    Under Construction
Yes, I took a picture of a construction site – can you blame me?

    Maine Mast

    Maine Mast
At the edge of the Naval Academy there is a monument for the Battleship Maine – can any of you tell me when this ship was important and why? Katy, you and Tina are disqualified…

Of course, we blew up our own battleship off the coast of Cuba in order to sway public opinion and allow us to declare war. It could have only happened to the USS Maine, they couldn’t have gotten away with blowing up the battleship Texas.

Went to visit the International Spy Museum, but they didn’t allow pictures so you don’t get to see anything. If you are ever in DC, however, I would recommend a visit. It would be best to go during the middle of a business day, though, as crowds tend to lessen the experience.

I spent Friday just wandering around aimlessly (the heat will do that to you). I did intend to visit the National Archives to see the Declaration, etc., but it is still under reconstruction. So, I wantered around the mall and visited a few other buildings in the Smithsonian before going to lunch with Tina.

After lunch I went back and visited the Corcoran Gallery of Art – spent the whole afternoon in the place as it was quite cool (my favorite part was finding a very nice silver teapot in a back corner – the artist’s name was Paul Revere! How many of you think “artist” first when you hear that name?). Unfortunately, photography was not allowed in the Corcoran, so you are stuck with random photos of DC…

    Thwarted Again!

    Thwarted Again!
The last time I was here was in October of 2002 – and they were merrily rebuilding the steps of the National Archive. I didn’t bother to check this time to see if they were done, but apparently step-building takes longer than one might expect. So, once again I get a picture of the outside of the building…

    Cool Sculpture

    Cool Sculpture
After failing at the National Archives I decided to go back across the mall to check out the Smithsonian Castle. Yes, I know there really isn’t much in the place, but I did want to see it. On the way across I passed through an outdoor sculpture garden and ran across this piece, which I found very amusing for some reason. Do any of you recognize this?

What fun! An old eraser for typewriters…erase with the round part and whisk away the crumbs with the brisle end! Cool!

Hey wait…that looks more than a little like something NASA’s probably looking for…

    Metropolitain Entrance

    Metropolitain Entrance
I’m not quite sure why the entrance to the cafe in the sculpture garden is made of a Metropolitain entrance from Paris. Not sure, but surprised at how well it blends in.

    Smithsonian Castle

    Smithsonian Castle
Here’s a shot of my next target – the Smithsonian Castle. No, there isn’t much inside it, but it was kind of cool to visit, and I do like the way it looks on the Mall.

    Capitol Castle

    Capitol Castle
I’m not sure exactly what event was being held on the Mall, but there were lots of tents and other random things. This is probably one of the more random – a small castle outline.

Looks like it could be the beginning of a Capitol One Visa commercial.. (Whats in YOUR wallet?)

    More Randomness on the Mall

    More Randomness on the Mall
Even more random than the castle was the full-sized adobe house that was going up right in front of the Smithsonian Castle. Very bizarre (as is the character walking in front of my camera).

Are you sure you’re in DC? It looks more like California…

    Industrial Arts West Wing

    Industrial Arts West Wing
Here’s a nice, artsy shot of the west wing of the Industrial Arts building. The exhibit inside was a bust (A Scottish culture exhibit with one kilt, three bagpipes and a picture of a Scot throwing a caber) but the outside and the gardens near it were quite cool.

    Smithsonian Castle

    Smithsonian Castle
Another artsy shot of the Smithsonian Castle and a very nice hibiscus bush.

    Still Ugly

    Still Ugly
And here I present a nicely decorated side of the ugliest building in Washington DC – the Old Executive Office Building. It’s a sad state of affairs when even red-white-and-blue bunting do nothing for your decor.

As part of my Father’s Day gift to Dad, we made a trip to one of our old homes to do a little constructive Z3 flogging. Here are a few of the shots.

    Downtown Thurber

    Downtown Thurber
Our first stop (approximately 140 miles west of Terrell) was Thurber – home of the New York Hill restaurant, which makes the finest chicken fried steak I have ever eaten. This is a picture of most of the town of Thurber below the restaurant

I agree. I have never had a better chicken fried steak anywhere, and that takes in a lot of Texas.

Actually, on Easter Sundays we had as many as 13. I pastored this church, along with two others – Palo Pinto and Graford – from 6/79 to 6/81. It was a wonderful two years for all of us.

Though the church is called “Cedar Springs UMC,” there is no water her at all. That’s right, no indoor toilet either.

Too bad we didn’t have somebody to take pictures as we screamed up and down the canyon south of Ramon Houston’s ranch. This little car really corners well, and Jim and I tried out all of its best atributes.
